The DC Rollergirls league is a 501(c)(3) volunteer-run non-profit that was formed in 2006. They are proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (the WFTDA), the national governing body for women’s amateur flat track roller derby whose membership consists of skater-owned and -operated leagues nationwide. The DC Rollergirls’ mission is to promote athleticism and the physical and mental strength of its members and associates as well as to foster self-worth, personal strength, and female empowerment. The DC Rollergirls are very involved in the community through partnerships with local charities and participation in local events.
The women who make up the league come from all walks of life– they are engineers, architects, lawyers, teachers, nurses, writers, artists, librarians and work-at-home moms. Some may have started out novices, while others as experienced skaters, some as seasoned athletes, and a few as former couch potatoes. But they all have one thing in common – they are now strong, fierce competitive athletes who are passionate about the sport of roller derby.
